April 2007

To: All Parents & Players Of Woodbury Baseball & Softball-

Welcome to the Woodbury Baseball and Softball 2007!!  I would first like to thank everyone who helped us out last year. The entire Board of Directors has been working very hard since the last pitch of 2006 was thrown, we meet at least once a month (and sometimes more than that) during the calendar year.  Woodbury Baseball & Softball does not go into hibernation during the winter months.  We are running programs for coaches, players and umpire candidates during the off season.  We are in the process of lining up space (which in Woodbury is at a premium) for these programs.  You will see more on these programs in the future months.

With the growth of Woodbury Baseball & Softball, we have been finding it more difficult to schedule all our games and practices due to the lack of established fields.  We currently utilize fields at Hollow Park, Mitchell Elementary School, Woodbury Middle School and Nonnewaug High School for our home games and other towns fields for our away games.  We currently have only one field for each division and once the season begins there is not enough space for practices and games.  We only have use of the softball field at Hollow Park on weekends and must wait until school activities are completed at WMS & NHS for our practices/games to begin.  In short, we have run out of fields.  One of the main goals that I and the Board of Directors has been working on is the addition of new fields.  We have termed this our "Fields of Dreams" project.  To update everyone as to where we stand right now - I signed a lease agreement with Region 14 for use of the property behind the NHS fields and Route 6.  This area is known to some as “The Flats” and has had corn growing on it during the summer months for many years.  We have been working with an engineering firm in town and have plans drawn and a 3 phase construction plan ready to go.  We finally passed the Wetlands Commission and Zoning Commission boards you should see some progress this fall on the fields!

With that said we have already begun plans for our major fundraising part of this project.

On Monday, June 4th 2007 we will be again hosting the Woodbury Baseball and Softball Field of Dreams Golf Tournament at Heritage County Club.  This year will be the fifth year hosting our tournament and we anticipate that we will have well over enough funds to begin building phase one of our field project.  Look for information on our website for updates and photos as it takes shape.

Over the last 5 years, Woodbury Baseball & Softball has also been working on improving an abandoned field behind Mitchell Elementary School. The field was entirely re-done with a new surface, new fencing and new benches.  Many hours of work have brought this field back for our use.  The Minor League Softball Division will play games there and the T-Ball division will practice and play games there.  Woodbury Baseball & Softball paid for all the improvements to this field.

Woodbury Baseball & Softball has worked very hard to keep you informed.  We established our website and a “hotline” informational phone line.  Both of these tools allow us to keep you informed!   In the event of inclement weather we make announcements in both places.  No more calling the coach or going to the field and sitting in the car wondering if there is a game.  Members of Woodbury Baseball & Softball who work locally are able to assess the fields and determine if games will be played or not.  If you have any questions if a scheduled game will be played, log in or call and listen to the hotline.

If you have any questions, comments or would like become more involved I ask that you email me through the website.  The email address is woodburyct@charter.net.  We need your new ideas to keep Woodbury Baseball & Softball moving forward.

Looking forward to a successful and fun 2007!
